MRS. BRENDEL'S FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

RELIGION:
We are learning about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Oils.  Father Telken has graciously agreed to speak to our class about the Chrism Oils and about how they are used in the Sacraments.  Our Confirmation preparation will continue with a weekly prayer circle and discussion on how we can best use our time, talents, and gifts to glorify God.  I have received all of my sponsors’ approval forms.  Thank you!  Next, we will be writing letters to our priests and the Archbishop requesting permission to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Our Lenten journey begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17th with an All School Mass.  You are invited to come join us.  Please, remind your child that Lent is a time to cleanse our soul with reconciliation (penance), extra prayer (prayer and reading the Bible),  and good deeds/service (alms).   If your child is available on Fridays, the Knights of Columbus would like for us to bus tables from 5 to 7:30.  I have a list in the classroom for sign ups.  The Knights have been very generous with us.  Can we follow their example of generosity by giving some of our time?
On Feb. 11th , we attended Mass with Archbishop Robert Carlson.

EARTH SCIENCE:
We are on Chapter 14 which teaches us about the different zones in the ocean.   Students will be constructing dioramas/models of these different zones as their project for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are researching information on the internet and watching videos on various Civil War Battles to aid us in constructing our two page report.  We have identified seven major battles of the Civil War and two students are reporting on each battle.  Megan Walsh was kind enough to bring in some artifacts about the Civil War.  She had various “Harper Weekly” newspapers and slave chains to display.

LIFE SCIENCE:
Our “Fishes, Amphibians, and Reptiles” project and test finished our study of animal adaptations for Chapter 12.   We have started our Soil and Water Conservation Posters.  Mr. David Menke was here and gave a presentation on Healthy Habitats on January 27.  Our next chapter will be on “Birds and Mammals”.

5/6 SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are learning about the success of Alexander the Great’s conquests and what made him so successful in creating such a large empire.

GRAMMAR:
We are practicing using the proper adjectives and adverbs when comparing two or more objects.  We have been using worksheets to reinforce identifying subjects, predicates, adjectives, and adverbs.  We will continue on with our textbook and learn how to combine sentences and identify direct and indirect objects.  If your child wants extra credit, they can write a full heading, name the articles of speech, and write the conjunctions for sentences to receive 10 extra credit points.

READING:
We are finishing our Drama unit by writing a radio script of their choice.  Next, we will start a unit on Poetry.  Each student will receive a book by a particular poet and they will critique and analyze that poet’s work.
